In stately Edgartown, on the island of Martha’s Vineyard, stands The Charlotte Inn. Within this venerable establishment’s walls the proprietors have created a spirited revival of Edwardian-era elegance. From the instant the guest steps through the front door into the foyer hung fine nineteenth-century oil paintings, then approaches a grand mahogany desk to sign the old-fashioned ledger, there is a sense of having stepped back in time.
Built for Samuel Osborne in 1864, the grand home was a fitting symbol of a wealthy merchant’s station. Since the 1920s it has been a haven for generations of discriminating travelers during all four of the islands distinct seasons.
