In truth, the creation of the State Forest eighty-four years back undoubtedly saved the heart of the Island.
While much of the rest of the Vineyard – the best of it really – is now private, cordoned off for part-time use by Bostonians and New Yorkers and Washingtonians, the State Forest is the largest chunk that hasn’t been lost.
